As additions to this list, anyone ever seen:
1. Operaton Daybreak - not strictly a battlefield type war movie but dealing with political assassination. Czech operatives under British command taking out Reinhard Heydrich. Pretty intense portrayal.
2. Memphis Belle - I recall seeing this back in law school. I always thought the allied bomber war effort was just as gritty as the fight on the ground. I found the scene where a crashing messerschmitt plows through the midsection of a B17 freaky. Pretty much a lot of in your face action.

I just have one peeve with memphis belle.
Conversation went something like this:
"I can't bomb accurately through this cloud cover!"
"There may be innocent civilians down there! turn it around and let's try again!"
Utter tosh.

off topic but i feel i must post it. The most finely wrought war film of recent days has to be Master and Commander; the far side of the word. there. i said it.

i have seen the following movies, some with drama/comedy orientation but nevertheless during conflicts of different eras: 1. Malena- its an italian film about a lady with a husband in the italian army who went to war, lady turned collaborator while enduring small town gossip. 2. The Aryan couple- a jewish couple working for a nazi official and eventually crossed the swiss border to freedom. 3. As far as my feet will carry me- a german film about a german POW in siberia who escaped and played cat and mouse with the pursuing russians. 4. The Downfall- i know you guys know this movie, galing ni ama(HItler)! hehe 5. Napola- another german movie, life of recruits in one of the SS training academies 6. The Black book- a lady jew member of the resistance with a pledge to avenge those involved in the capture and murder of her family. 7. Max Manus- Max Manus- the most wanted member of the Norwegian resistance . 8. Defiance- jewish brothers turned resistance fighters(eastern europe) 9. Blue Sky- czech/yugoslavian (i think) volunteers in the RAF 10. Stalingrad- German film,i just love watching german soldiers in action! other than that i didnt like the drama part. here are non WWII you might wanna watch too: . Innocent Voices- spanish film on children trapped in war (south America) Shake Hands with the Devil- Genocide in Rwanda
. Taek gu ki( unsure with the spelling)- korean war era, an older brother joining the south korean army just so he could watch over his younger brother drafted into the army(battle scenes are of pvt Ryan quality- flying limbs, arms etc) The Assembly- a chinese unit during the korean war, isolated and solely defended a critical area, apparently the order to withdraw never reached them, the unit reduced to one member(the commander), who tried to find other members of his unit after the war. welcome to dongmagkol- another korean war movie, but story rotates around a small village that is so remote that they have not heard of the war, have no knowledge on guns, planes etc. Innocence almost to the brink of stupidity, very comical!

Seeing good old Mournblade started this thread, my two cents.
Master and Commander: Well done piece; masterful on naval warfare in the 17th century. They should do more.
The Eagle Has Landed, 1977. C'mon. Good hearted Fallschirmjager in Polish airborne uniforms taking on Larry Hagman led US Rangers in an English town. C'mon! Story sucks, but the firefights of legend!
Downfall: Excellent film. Last days of the Berlin Bunker meets... The Office.
The Beast of War (1989): Jason Patric, George Dzundza as Russian T-62 crewmen in Afghanistan. Tank kaboom!
Red Dawn (the original) has gotta be in there for pure Cold War cheese!
Malena. Oy. Monica Belluci. Woof.
I'll keep posting as I remember them...

sir Labrador: if you liked Assembly, you just might dig 'City of Life and Death' if you havnt seen it yet. Its about the rape of Nanking. I think its also a chinese film.
Soldiers and Saints( or vice versa, cant remember)- mixed members from different US units who get caught behind enemy lines in the battle of the bulge. Silent Night- this one is a hallmark movie, german and US soldiers end up in one haouse during xmas eve.

I thought spike lee's miracle at sta. anna was going to be a drag but i quite enjoyed it. Buffalo soldiers in action in italy with a very telling reenactment of a notorious massacre by troops of the 16th ss pzgren div. reichsfuhrer ss. really worth watching.
Also enjoyed 'the fallen" an independent film involving germans, italians, americans and...the mafia! notable for it's sequences with an sdkfz 232 8 wheel SPG.
worst ever?...Steel Tempest! absolute cheese!

uprising- the warsaw ghetto uprising dont know if the details are historically correct but the hardshipsof the ghetto residents was well portrayed. the tiger tank here is i think the same as that of pvt ryan(T-34 lower hull)it totally depressed the adrenaline in my system, i hoped to see a real complete tiger in both movies. gray line- life in auschwitz
