Walked into a thrift shop in Cubao this morning and was pretty shocked when I saw a real deal issue USN G-1 leather flight jacket hanging on the door by the entrance. This is the one that has USN punched in small holes on the right flap which cannot be seen when the zipper is closed. It is the same type jacket worn by Tom Cruise in the movie "Top Gun" when he rides his motorcycle. It is in excellent condition and is dated 1971 (which puts in the Vietnam War era).
This jacket was brought to use by the U.S. Navy in the 1930s, and standardized by the Navy in 1940 as the M-422A. It became known as the G-1 post WW2. Used by the USN, USMC and Coast Guard pilots and personnel on flying status. I believe it is still current issue.
Tag indicates contractor is Brill Bros., who did indeed make these for the USN.
The price? A ridiculously low Php 1,150.00... It was 1.5K, but I was able to haggle it down.

I need to go back to that shop. They seem to have quite a few militaria surplus. Cubao is one of my "hunting grounds" as they have several shops. I have been able to pick up some hard to find uniforms and equipment there, including a M1943 field jacket. In another shop 3 weeks ago I saw a Japanese WW2 canteen and mess kit for sale. I didn't get them. The canteen had minimal dents but it had some small holes and was missing the carrier and stopper, so I wasn't interested. The mess kit was missing the inner tray. I'll be going back to Beijing after X'mas and I saw Japanese field gear going for good prices at the Panjiayuan Antique Market, so I'll take my chances there. Even another shop had a US 1918 dated canteen. The cover was black bakelite/ plastic (same material as the usual WW2 canteens we see) but the top of the cover was perfectly flat, not like the "usual" type which has a depression. From what I know, this type of cover is harder to come by. It was being sold for Php 900.00, but I already have a lot of WW2 canteens so I didn't get it.

Thrift shop steals my end, after so many patrol runs to Baguio:
Originals: Swiss Army bread bag Austrian Army bread bag (pea camo) Austrian Army nylon butt pack w/ shoulder straps British tropical patrol packs (Patt 44?) Soviet radio bag Czechoslovakian Army bread bag Polish Pantera tunic Early Bundeswehr koppel & stoss Bundeswehr Flecktarn kit
Replica: Leibermuster trousers Afrika Korps tunic Afrika Korps shirt
Must add, with candor: Modern high-speed low-drag has no soul.
