Interesting....but it will depend on the plastic used i think. The barrel junction area (where even the metal ones break) will be pretty weak....

i'm guessing this is a good gun for a secondary gun or maybe spare parts or conversion parts

Spend the $80 on something else. Plastic gearboxes are rubbish

i can consider if the gearbox is replaceable by a metal one.

Well....I just bought an all-plastic Thompson M1A1 at Vincent's Hobby Shop (Makati Cinema Square) for P2,950. The bad news is that it shoots .12s at 312fps, and .2s at 210fps. The GOOD news: Barrel sleeve with foregrip is swappable with the CYMA M1928 Thompson. So my M1928 is now an M1A1 (except for the rear sight assembly). Aside from making the CYMA gun lighter, I'm no longer worried about the China metal barrel sleeve shattering, ever. (It happened to my old Tokyo Marui M1A1 - the metal barrel sleeve broke off from the main receiver.) BONUS: The gun comes with a "standard" long box mag (about 50 bbs capacity) and a hicap drum mag (I reckon about 300 bbs, but I still have to fill the sucker up). All plastic. Both slot nicely into the CYMA mag well, although the fit is kinda of tight around the guide. I reckon a bit of sanding and filing down will solve that issue. Will post photos of the transplant when I can

That's the one! Any chance a cyma gearbox will fit?

I'm not sure, but I suppose, being plastic, I suppose it will be a lot easier to "reconfigure" the mounts in the casing to accept a standard AEG gearbox...
Although I'm not inclined to open up either gun at the moment.
Still, it'll be gratifying to find out that the upgrade is possible - especially if (or when) the CYMA Thompson metal receiver fails.

So which is which? The gun above is MOSTLY the plastic M1A1 Thompson. I had already transplanted the metal barrel sleeve and pistol foregrip from the CYMA. The gun below is the mostly-metal CYMA M1928, with the plastic barrel sleeve and handguard from the plastic toy attached. Attachments:

The plastic tommy also comes with a hicap drum mag. It's the one on the left. A bit smaller in diameter and a LOT lighter than the stock hicap metal drum mag from CYMA. I've yet to see how the cheapie performs in battle though.... Attachments:
