This was inspired by Eliel's home made brit kit. 
Here's a pic of the original PH1 British Airborne helmet:
An original one will cost an arm and a leg. Possible steel substitutes would be the Royal Armoured Corps tanker helmet of a british motorcycle dispatch helmet. You can also find some belgian para and east german para helmets that will be very similar.
But is you want it real cheap, this is the way to go....
