Hello everyone,
My swedish canteen finally arrived from wephaus after a 3 week delay probably brought about by the christmas mail rush. Needless to say I rushed upstairs and immediately clipped it to my hikishop bread bag...but something was missing. Yes the basic shape was there but well, it didn't look German enough. I decided to address this in two steps. The first by doing a quick and easy solution based on the existing canteen cover and some easily accessible add ons.
First, I went to mega mall and bought a cheap made in thailand stainless (or aluminum) drinking cup. This cost me P 175. I'm pretty sure you can get it for half that price in divisoria. I then went to trinoma mall where i had earlier seen some leather straps in the 3rd floor landmark hardware store for 65 bucks each. I then went to Mr. quickie (gotta love that name) and had a leather retaining strap sewn into the wool cover for P80.00. I was now all set for the assembly:
first of all, you'll find that the canteen cup and part of the clip assembly fits under the cup and thus, the strap need not be cut. It can remain essentially a swedish canteen and there is no need for surgery.
Next, take a leather strap and pass it under the retaining strap added to the wool cover.
If your strap is too short, attach a second strap by buckling it to the end of the first strap
I found that 2 straps were enough to go around and hold the whole assembly snug.
simply pass the strap around the cup and PULL WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT to get a snug fit on the canteen. It will be very difficult to disassemble this in the field so i suggest you put a second water bottle in your bread bag.
Once your satisfied with everything, simply take the whole thing apart and spray the cup black.
there you have it, a decidedly more teutonic canteen.
My next step will be to source some red brown wool and make a proper and korrekt canteen cover.
