Nice article. Yup, Yamamoto respected the industrial might of the United States. What was not mentioned was some of the details on how Yamamoto met his end. He was essentially assassinated by the Americans. Having broken the Japanese Naval code, the Americans knew that Yamamoto was going to visit one of their island bases, including time schedule, plane markings, etc. When these information was received, it was relayed all the way to the president. By reasons of plausible deniability, there are no written records for the command to take Yamamoto down. P-38s were sent to "hunt" Yamamoto down ("Happy hunting" was the verbal command given by Admiral Nimitz to Halsey as a go signal). Yamamoto was traveling with his Chief of Staff Matome Ugaki when they were ambushed. Ugaki although badly injured, survived and like a Samurai of the old, pledged that he will avenge the death of Yamamoto. Ugaki participated the Battle of Leyte Gulf initially in command of the battleship Yamato (was ousted by Takeo Kurita during the battle when his flagship was sunk) and then later, Ugaki was flew the very last Kamikaze mission of the war.
