Just saw this film today (now available at your friendly dibidi). I must say, this is among the very best war movies i've seen. Up there with Cross of Iron and Blackhawk down. A very moving story revolving around the senior commanders of the fortress of Brest that was attacked on the first day of the Great Patriotic War. The story is told from the viewpoint of a child in an Red Army band and details the time immediately before the war to the time the fortress fell.
A very "soviet" film with not too much of the melodramatics that come with more hollywood productions. Of course the killing of innocent civilians and brutality of the germans is shown to good advantage as it should be but not too the extent of "come and see"...that movie almost made me give up my german obsession. But this is a war movie on a very human scale. you feel very much for the characters and you become attached to them as the movie progresses. You very easily become sucked up in the struggle to defend the fortress and stay alive.
In terms of detail, there are a few farby things i spotted. Germans wearing gamaschen in 1941, lots and lots of east german boots. But these are really very minor considering the general excellence of the movie. A very decent attempt was made to produce Panzer and Flammpanzer 3's (bases on BMP's). You get to see a 45mm anti tank gun in action and lots of other goodies.
two thumbs up and a jumbo tub of popcorn on this one. must see! that said, this is not a "fun" movie. It is a serious depiction of warfare, not at all glorious with all the grit, dirt blood and death.
I also got me a copy of Pathfinders: in the company of strangers. Thats up for review next.
