Many officers preferred to use their continental litzen and breast eagles and used these on their desert uniforms. Some also used the tropical all ranks light blue grey on tan litzen. For those opting for the continental litzen, you can actually use mounted litzen with green wool backing and sew this on to your tropical uniform.

This is true but was by "Officers" only and the substitution was up to the individual. NCO and enlisted men used the tropical version litzen only. Keep in mind that officers were issued the same tunic as the enlisted men and for the most part retained the factory litzen and breast eagle as the enlisted man. Officers relied generally on the shoulder board only for rank display. Readings from:German Army Uniforms of World War II Page 64 by: Wade Krawczyk, 1995

the 16th SS division Reichsfuhrer SS wore sahariana style tropical uniforms in italy. They were involved in defending against the anzio landings and anti-partisan operations including the massacre of civilians in sta anna. Part of the subject of the new spike lee movie, miracle at sta. anna. The heer also wore tropical uniforms in italy though i would suspect that as the allies worked their way up the italian boot, you would see less and less of these. Same with the luftwaffe and fallschirmjager.

herr kalbs... does the wh nor ss used the other afrika type uniform in italy??? i think they did???... just a guess based on volstad's art... The SS or Luftwaffe never wore Heer style Afrika style tunics, the SS based thiers on the Italian design sahariana and the luftwaffe used a tan material cotton twill tunic. In italy most of the tunics were the Continental ones. Some earlier designs used a light gray cotton twill tunic that eventually bleached by the Italian sun turned almost white. Remember the Afrika Korp was pretty much destroyed or captured, those who did escape probably went on R&R or for a refit where new uniforms would be issued. Also, most of the units in Italy were not those from the Afrika Korps

Judging from photographs, it seems statistically, in italy the luftwaffe tended to wear tropical uniforms more than their heer counterparts. Luftwaffe pattern tropical uniforms are seen right up to the monte cassino and anzio/nettuno campaign in may 1944. The luftwaffe tunic differed significally from the heer tunic as it was made from a lighter golden tan color. The upper pockets had pleats but the lower ones did not: www.germanmilitaria.com/Luftwaffe/photos/L013360.htmlthe luftwaffe tropical pants were of a very baggy cut with buckles and straps at the ankles to gather the pants. there was a map pocket on the front of the left thigh.

thanks for the pic, the shoulder board is tan not olive with lt green lining right? No, the boards are the same as the uniform color and the border depends on which unit you are with. White for Infantry Gold yellow for Cavalry or Recon Pink for Armor Red for artillery/Anti tank Lemon yellow for signals Bright green for Jager Black for engineers Light blue for transport Orange for field police and etc…
