Did the Grossdeutschland Division use canvas y-straps towards the end of the war?
I'd like to go for the GD look, but I've already ordered canvas instead of leather y-straps (the leather ones are more expensive, plus the shipping). I know the tropical gear was issued as ersatz in the continent, but were they given to elite troops such as those in the GD division?
If not, I might have to settle for the generic late-war WH look.

yes, Canvas Y straps were in common use by 1944. Most probably many in GD as well.

Not sure about GD as GD was one of the most well equiped WH units. They even had jackboots while most of the German army were issued the ankle boots. But who knows. Go GD if you want to.

Yes, in 1940 the canvas model was issued for tropical use but as the war progressed material shortages forced their issuance to troops in all theaters. There would be no reason why GD troops would not be issued them. GD had the same supply problems as all divisions
Note that generally only front line troops were issued y-straps where the Ersatz (Replacements and support troops) used the belt hook method.
