On January 16, 1942, Ed Ramsey Led troops E and F of the 26th Cavalry (PS) on a probe into the town of Morong...headlong into a numerically superior Japanese force crossing the river and streaming into the town. Amid intense fire from the surprised Japanese, the troopers charged into the surprised invaders and into the annals of history. What a coincidence that yesterday i had just finished the Book "The Twilight Riders" the last charge of the 26th cavalry. I literally could not put the book down. It was a white knuckle read of a terrific fighting retreat fought by the last cavalrymen shielding and delaying japanese troops and ensuring an orderly retreat into the Bataan Peninsula. Really excited to see Captain Fernandez again and shake his hand. The exploits of the 26th easily match or even surpass the epic fighting retreats fought by the Germans in the last 2 years of the war. Here you read of allied commanders fighting at the front of their men, lieutenants and captains boldly left behind to buy time for their men, racing about on sidecar harleys checking on the defence and urging their men to hold. General wainright driving boldly back and forth in a packard just shy of japanese armor to check on his boys.
