I’ve always been fascinated by WW2, especially the very intimidating German Wehrmacht gear and weapons. Unfortunately, translating this passion into airsoft would be, at first glance, extremely expensive. There was and is only a limited choice of ww2 German airsoft replicas and their high prices and relative rarity make acquiring these treasures locally almost impossible. Around 2 years ago, I came across the Dboys Mauser Kar98K. At last, a cheap ACM replica of the standard battle rifle of the ww2 German soldier! At first glance, it was beautiful: full metal, realistic wood finish, and ejecting metal shells! Unfortunately, because of the ejecting shells, non-upgradable, leak prone forward pushing mechanism, it was destined to become a wall hanger. So I didn’t buy it. Fast forward to today. I came up with a solution to make the kar98k a skirmishable weapon...Use the JG Bar10! At first I did extensive research on how to build the kar98 from scratch using the bar10...I thought of custom wood stocks, machining and metal casting parts ...but the end result would cost even more than a Tanaka Kar98! Then I came across a WW2 Airsoft forum based in the UK. What some members did was to put a JG Bar10 into the stock of a Dboys Kar98! I was inspired! I bought the Dboys Kar98K (which by now was one sale) and modified both the dboys plastic stock and my JG bar10 to fit. And lots of dremel work, hack sawing, sanding...Here it is...the Skirmish-ready Kar98K or as I call it…the Bar98k!
The dboys kar98 stock was modded to fit the JG reciever using the bolt handle cutout as a guide. I split the stock in two to make modding it better.
I had to cut the Bar10 outer barrel up to the hop assembly.
The bar98 uses the Bar10/VSR magazine. I had to cut out the magazine catch from the bar10 stock and attach this to the dboys stock.
Parts of the dboys kar98 used were: Dboys plastic stock, metal outerbarrel (cut), retention rings. Parts of the JG Bar10 used were the: Bar10 internals, trigger guard, magazine, magazine catch, inner barrel, and hop mechanism.
These 2 screws hold the bar10 internals within the dboys kar98 stock. Easy to disassemble and take-down. Very solid.
The front assembly is held in place just like the real steel/dboys kar 98. The barrel band and stock band slide into place and are locked together by a slide-pin. No mods here. Again, very very solid.
A little epoxy around the bolt handle to make it look a little more like the kar98 bolt...
I also filled the hollow stock with expanding foam to make it more solid and to help eliminate vibration and noise. The bar98 has also been fully upgraded with a full Edgi works kit. It shoots just a little over 500 fps with 0.2g and is deadly accurate.
Finally, some beauty shots....
Thanks to Steve D. and Boshman at WW2 Airsoft.uk for the pioneering ideas!
The plastic stock has since been replaced by a Dboys real wood stock:
